Mom to Be Monday: Week 14-Let’s Snoogle

I hate to say it, but hubs has been replaced.  Meet Snoogle.  The pillow that spoons with me all night long.       

I bought this pillow last week at Buy Buy Baby because I’ve been having problems sleeping comfortably.  Sleeping on my back has become a no-no because when I do, I feel a slight pressure on my lower stomach and it feels like my insides are moving up.  Weird.  Sleeping on one side for too long starts to hurt my hips and switching back and forth just keeps me up all night.  Enter Snoogle.  I LOVE it.  The first night I slept with it, I slept like a little baby.  I will be taking this thing with me wherever I have sleep.  Sorry hubs.

At 14 weeks, baby C is about the size of a lemon.  He/She weighs about 1.5 oz and is about 3 1/2 inches long.  The big thing this week is that the baby can make facial expressions and squint.  The peanut’s kidney’s are producing urine and it’s being released into the amniotic fluid.  I always wondered if babies used the bathroom while in utero, now I know.  The baby can also grasp and if we were to have an ultrasound right now, we could probably catch the baby sucking its thumb.  At our 20 week appointment, I just hope that we can see whether or not the baby has my dimples 🙂  

How I’m Feeling
Emotional.  I can cry at the drop of a hat.  This weekend while hubs and I were at my parents’ house, he make kind of a smart remark that wasn’t meant to be mean, but I had to excuse myself to the bathroom because I just started crying.  I think he finally realized how these hormones are affecting me.  I also cried last night while watching Octavia Spencer win her Oscar and during this Johnson & Johnson commercial.

GAHH!!!! Other than crying like a baby, my energy levels have been good throughout the day.  I wake up, go to work get a workout in, but by the end of the day I’m spent.  On Friday I came home from work, crashed on the couch, woke up to eat, and then spent the rest of the night curled up in the fetal position watching ‘What Would You Do?’ with my parents until it was time for bed.  Exciting stuff I know.  As far as physical changes go, I have some peach fuzz that decided to show up on my stomach.  Not cool.  Thankfully, it’s very light.  I also have heartburn whenever I eat anything acidic or spicy :-/ Something I will just have to deal with because I really love spicy food.  Overall, I’m feeling good and enjoying every bit of this journey.  I can’t believe it’s a third of the way over and in 6 months we’ll have a little baby to take care of!  We are blessed beyond words.   


An Oscar-worthy Meal

Good Morning!  I hope everyone’s weekend was a good one.  We hung out in Wisconsin on Saturday because we had a friend’s 30th birthday party to go to.  I picked hubs up from the train station in the afternoon and we headed to the Third Ward for brunch.  I wanted to take him somewhere he hasn’t been yet, so we headed to Cafe Benelux.  
I love this place, along with all of its sister restaurants.  If you’re ever in the Milwaukee area, make sure to visit one.  The restaurant has a European feel and was named after the Benelux region (Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg).  I knew LC would be a fan because of their extensive bier menu.  While he enjoyed a beer with his brunch, I enjoyed a virgin Mary. 
I would say it’s just as good as a bloody Mary with the exception of the heartburn afterward, a new to me pregnancy symptom that decided to show up this week.  
Their brunch menu is pretty extensive and I had a hard time trying to decide on what I wanted to eat.  I finally went with a polenta dish.  It was polenta, which if you’ve never had it is the same consistency as grits, wild mushrooms, leeks, greens, and two eggs topped with hollandaise sauce.  It was very good and very filling.  
 We came home last night and I wanted to cook us a nice meal, since it has truly been awhile.  With my current living situation, I don’t get to tinker around in the kitchen as much during the week and I miss it, especially now that I want to eat more than cereal and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  So last night, in celebration of the Oscars, I made us what I believe to be an Oscar worthy meal, with the mashed sweet potatoes being the main winner.   

On the plate we have asparagus baked with olive oil, pepper and Parmesan cheese.  Scallops sauteed in butter, garlic, and lemon.  And last but not least, the best mashed sweet potatoes I’ve ever made.  They were mashed with goat cheese, milk, onion powder, and infused with truffle oil.  

I boiled the sweet potatoes with the skins on until they were soft enough to mash with the hand mixer.  I placed them into a bowl with a little bit of milk and mashed away.  I then added some goat cheese crumbles, just a sprinkling of onion powder, and a drizzle of truffle oil and continued to mash.  I placed them into the oven to keep them warm until it was time to serve them.  When they came out, I sprinkled a little bit of Parmesan on top.  Hubs said they were the best sweet potatoes he’s ever had.  A winning night for me and my sweet potatoes.

After dinner, we watched the Oscars and concluded that we really need to add Hugo along with some others to our Netflix queue.  I thought it was a pretty classy awards show and I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t get teary eyed when Octavia Spencer won her award for The Help.  I blame the pregnancy hormones.

Mom to Be Monday: Week 13-Work it Out

Since my junior year in high school, working out has played a big part of my life.  I started out by running a lot outdoors, moved it to the gym, and then came classes.  After I sprained my ankle last spring while running, I was forced to venture outside of my comfort zone and discovered my love for The Bar Method and Zumba.

When I found out I was pregnant, I not only hoped to have a healthy baby, but I wanted to be able to maintain a certain level of fitness throughout my pregnancy.  Getting through the first trimester was rough when all I wanted to do was sleep.  Working out was like a Catch-22: It was the last thing I wanted to do, but the only thing that gave me energy.  I kept up with a pretty normal routine, but one thing that was a no go for me was going to Bar Method classes.  This was because my nausea would sneak up on my during the most inopportune times (like right in the middle of class).  So I kept the Bar Method at home and did the DVDs.  The one thing that I do miss is hot yoga, especially in the dead of winter.  Running has also been placed on hold for the time being. 
During my first doctor’s visit, we discussed working out and what’s safe.  She recommended that I keep my heart rate around 140 BPM which didn’t seem very high to me, especially because I was used to elevating it around 170.  When hubs heard that he responded with, “Well I guess that means no more Zumba.” I looked at him like he was nuts.  I went home and did more research on this and what I found was that the heart rate thing was outdated and that 140 BPM was just the old standard.  If you worked out before you got pregnant regularly, you can keep up with the same fitness routine.  Just make sure that you can talk without gasping for breath and that you stay hydrated.  When I workout, I wear a heart rate monitor and my heart rate doesn’t normally get any higher than 155 BPM.  I also wear it to count how many calories I burn so that I know how much I need to replace.
At work, we’re allowed an hour of our day to workout in the gym.  I’ve had people come up to me and ask me if I’m allowed to workout while pregnant, tell me I shouldn’t be lifting more than 10 lbs, and ask me whether or not I should be doing that.  It’s annoying and it makes me want to carry around a brochure to give to people that explains the benefits of working out while pregnant.  Easier labor? Reduced pregnancy discomfort? Reduced Stress? I’ll take it!

Little baby is about the size of a peach this week and is measuring about 3 inches.  I feel that it might be a bit more since baby was almost 3 inches long at last week’s appointment.  The vocal cords and teeth are still forming.  If little bambino turns out to be a girl, she already has all of her eggs…CRAZY!  The baby’s intestines are moving from the umbilical cord to the tummy this week.   
How I’m feeling
Human again!  With the exception of almost throwing up a few mornings ago, I feel good as new.  I downed a salad at dinner on Saturday and I don’t feel like a walking zombie anymore.  Sleeping is getting a bit uncomfortable for me as I’m normally sleep every which way at night.  Trying to sleep on my side all night is a bit of a chore.  But when I sleep on my back I feel a slight pressure in my lower stomach and I feel a little winded.  
According to most websites, I’ve official hit my second trimester.  Some tell me that this is the last week of my first trimester.  I’m going with the first option because of how good I’ve been feeling.  Currently, I’ve been craving cold cereal with strawberries and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  Baked/grilled chicken is still on the “Do not Eat” list.  I think this is mostly a texture thing.     

Highs of the 1st Trimester

  • Finding out we were going to be parents
  • Getting to share the news with family at Christmas
  • Seeing the baby for the first time on the screen
  • Hearing the baby’s heart beat

Lows of the first Trimester

  • Loss of appetite 
  • Feeling sick
  • Being tired and feeling like I could sleep all day

In the second trimester I’m looking forward to feeling the baby kick for the first time and getting a real baby bump!  I can definitely tell that something’s going on in there and when I ask hubs if it looks like I’m pregnant he just responds with “You’re beautiful” because he thinks it’s a trick question 🙂

Mom to Be Monday: 12w2d-Almost Normal


Today, Baby C is about 12 weeks along and about the size of a plum.  I couldn’t find a plum at Trader Joe’s so this picture will just have to do.  In 5 days I will be into the second trimester which I’m very excited about because I hear it’s the best trimester but at the same time kind of nervous because that means I’m a 1/3 of the way through my pregnancy and will have to birth and raise this baby.
Craziness!  I still can’t believe that I’m going to be someone’s mom 🙂 I feel blessed & greatful beyond words.

Baby’s growing at a quick rate!  It’s weight has increased by 75% and all of the bones are starting to harden.  The fingernails and toenails are also starting to come in.  Along with having fingernails, the baby has its own set of fingerprints!  I our little babers will have my chin and LC’s nose.  I can’t wait to meet him/her! 
So far, I’m feeling more like my old self!  Since Friday, I haven’t had any nausea or sickness (knock on wood).  I also went to a work party on Saturday and didn’t feel the need to be in bed by 8pm.  It was a good weekend.  My appetite is also slowly returning and I’m moving away from PB&J sandwiches and pineapple for lunch and eating more REAL food.  On Friday, LC and I went to Saz’s for dinner and I ate a whole rack of ribs! I was THAT hungry.  Now I see how women can gain a crazy amount of weight during pregnancy. 
Today we had our 12 week appointment/our first trimester screening.  The first trimester screening involves an ultrasound & blood work.  The tech put the very cold gel on my belly and there it was: our baby.  Not just a little peanut shell, but a real, little baby.  She moved the wand around and took some measurements but the baby was not in the right position for the neck measurement she needed.  She had me lay on my left side for awhile to get the baby to flip and left the room.  We asked if everything was okay and she said yes, it’s very common for the baby to not be in the right position to begin with.  5 minutes later she returned to try again, and baby flipped.  No crazy cravings or aversions to report this week.  Like I said earlier, my appetite is starting to get back to normal.

My heart was full from the moment I saw this little face on the screen.  The baby was pretty active in there, which is crazy because I can’t feel a thing.  The baby was bouncing around, waving its arms and opening its cute little mouth.  It was so awesome to see! 

Mom to Be: Week 11-What We’re Reading

When I first found out I was pregnant I called the only BFF that I knew would understand what I was going through.  Her son will be two this April.  To say she was excited would be an understatement.  “Oh Mar! Now my son with have a new buddy to play with!! Go get some baby books, get excited because this baby’s coming!”  So I followed her advice and picked up some books, not only for myself, but also for the Dad to Be.

Dude’s Guide To Pregnancy: Description from Amazon: THE DUDES’ GUIDE TO PREGNANCY dispenses irreverent, honest, practical advice for the expectant father in an easy-to-understand–and often hilarious–man-to-man format.  Husband’s response? He thought it was stupid.  The authors tried to make the book cool when really they were making themselves sound like idiots.  They constantly referred to themselves as “the dude’s” and it just got annoying.  He wouldn’t even finish the book. I’m happy I bought it used from Amazon.

She’s Having a Baby; I’m having a Breakdown: I bought this one after the first book was a big , fat fail.  I saw it in B&N and skimmed through it a little bit.  It sounded better than the first.  Description from Amazon: Insider tips and advice for men on the roller-coaster ride called pregnancy and childbirth–the ideal gift for any expectant Father’s Day.  Husband’s response?  The book so far is really good (he’s only pg 18).  The author’s not trying too hard to be cool or hip he’s just being practical and to the point which makes it a more enjoyable read. 

Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy: When I went to the B&N near our house they didn’t have a lot of pregnancy books to choose to from and I wanted to go home with something.  It was between this book, What to Expect, and a few others.  I chose this book because it seemed like the less “textbookish” type of book.  There were colorful pictures 🙂 with examples of specific stretches and exercises to do depending on what stage of pregnancy you are in along with pictures on how to swaddle your baby.  There’s also a week by week guide to let you know what’s going on with the baby and your body, a labor and childbirth chapter, breastfeeding, your newborn and taking baby home.  Pretty much anything you want to know about pregnancy is in this book.

Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth:  Ina May is the nation’s leading midwife who writes a book about natural birth, which is what I’m aiming for (after a healthy happy baby of course). I love that when you tell people you’re pregnant, they feel the need to tell you their birthing horror stories or a friend of a friend who knew someone’s birthing horror story.  The first half of the book starts out with positive, uplifting birth stories that make me feel that getting this baby out is possible.  I’m still in Part 1 of the birth stories and I haven’t gotten to the second part of the book yet, which gets down to labor part but so far I’m really loving this book.

At 11w2d, baby’s the size of a lime!

Today, our little peanut is 11 weeks and 2 days old and is measuring about the size of a lime (or golf ball) and is almost fully formed.  It’s hard to believe that in 5 short weeks we’ve gone from poppy seed to lime.  Baby’s hands will start opening and closing and making tiny fists.  Tiny tooth buds are forming under the gums and bones are starting to harden.  Baby’s moving and kicking around and could even be having hiccups right now, as the diaphragm is forming.

Mama: Just when I thought the nausea was pretty much gone, it decided to creep up on me just in time for the weekend.  Drinking some water, deep breathing and snacking on something usually helps it subside.  It was gone by the time I met a friend for lunch.  The lack of energy is still the same and I’m praying it gets better within the next couple of weeks.  All other symptoms from last week remain.  I tried on my maternity ABU’s…as much as I’m in denial about having to go into maternity pants already, it’s time to admit that I will have to put these on sooner rather than later.  They’re pretty comfy 🙂  I also attended my second Bar Method class of my 1st trimester this morning.  Last time I took class I felt so sick toward the middle, I thought it was best to just stick to the DVDs at home until I was feeling better.  Great pregnancy workout!

Cravings: Fruit, especially pineapple and homemade apple chips.  Mexican food.  I ate it 3 times last week, and went to El Fuego (a restaurant in Milwaukee) twice this past week for lunch.

Aversions: Chicken is still high on the list along with sugary sweets like cupcakes.  I don’t think the baby loves sugar so much because the past few times I’ve attempted to eat cupcakes, they did not agree with me :-/ Veggies are off of the aversion list, I was able to eat some greens and green beans this week but they’re definitely not on the craving list.  I’m forcing myself to eat them though because they’re obviously good for me and the baby.

I’m off to cook up some delicious turkey meatballs that I found on Pinterest.  I hope that they’re a success! 

Take it and Bake It

I was a few bites into this meal before I snapped a picture. Pregnancy can make you pretty ravenous 🙂

Take and bake Mexican food?  Heck yeah!  Last Thursday, I participated in my second Milwaukee gluten free get together hosted by the lovely Sarah.  The get together was held at Cocina DeLeon Gourmet on Bluemound Rd. in Brookfield, WI. 
It’s not a sit down restaurant, but the owner was able to set up tables and a buffet for us to enjoy a delicious meal.  This wasn’t the first time I’ve had their delicious food.  Last family Christmas, instead of making a big meal for our family, my mom bought pans upon pans of enchiladas.  I’ve tasted their chicken and their beef enchiladas and both were very good.  Their guacamole is  pretty tasty as well.

On Thursday, I decided to try their vegetarian enchiladas: black bean & spinach.  Oh. So. Good.  They were so good that I bought a pan of 6 to take back to Chicago with me and make for hubs.  Next to my grandma’s enchiladas, these are the next best thing.  Along with the pan of enchiladas I bought the enchilada sauce as well as cheese.

I made them for dinner that following Monday.  Since I had some errands to run and didn’t have time to whip up a nice meal, I thought this would be the perfect solution.  I baked the enchiladas according to the directions on the pan (overall they took about 25 minutes to make) and I made Spanish rice from scratch…without a recipe. Win! Hubs enjoyed the meal and said that I can buy those enchiladas again.  He didn’t even realize they were meatless.  I’d like to one day make my own enchiladas since I’ve never done it, but I will buying these again.  They’re perfect for quick meals or when you have to feed a lot of people.  The only thing that would’ve made this meal more authentic? A nice cold margarita on the rocks 😉 BUT that will have to wait awhile!
